Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. What should I expect in the first session?
It is quite normal to feel nervous or anxious at the first session. I will introduce myself and ask you some questions in order to find out more information about your reason for coming for counselling and get an idea of what you want to achieve.
I invite you to sit down in a relaxed and informal way and we have a conversation. I help you to tell me what’s concerning you and I listen very carefully without making judgements or offering any easy answers. Rather I help you to make better sense of your experiences together with your thoughts and emotions, and explore options.
Q2. What will happen in other sessions?
I will encourage you to tell me about the difficulties you are experiencing and help you to work through your difficulties in order for you to find solutions or ways of accepting your situation. I help you to uncover meanings and recognise patterns, providing you with greater self-awareness. And I help you to think more kindly of yourself and gain a clearer understanding of your relationships with others. In essence, when you allow yourself the time and space to be heard, and when someone truly listens, then talking can help you feel valued, alive and connected.
Therapy can’t erase a difficult past but it can equip you to move on more easily, it can increase your resilience, and it can enable you to make positive changes going forward.
Q3. How long will I need to come for counselling?
This depends on the nature of your difficulty. It also depends on your commitment to change. People change at different rates and there are no right or wrong time periods as some people adapt to change more quickly or slowly than others. Making changes in your life is not always easy and is the reason that you are experiencing difficulties.
Q4. Where do I work?
I am a counsellor in Rodney Street, Liverpool.
Q5. What is counselling?
Counselling is getting assistance from a professional such as myself, to explore personal, social or psychological difficulties in confidence.
